Why Peter Magyar discusses the rights of Hungarians in Ukraine: expert analysis

Hungary’s future prime minister, Péter Magyar, is likely to continue raising the issue of the rights of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia, but he will do so through dialogue rather than confrontation.

This is discussed in the RBC-Ukraine article "Ultimatums or Dialogue? What Should Ukraine Expect from Péter Magyar and Hungary’s New Government?"

Péter Magyar’s stance on Hungarians in Ukraine

As noted by Rasto Kuzel, executive director of the Slovak organization Memo 9, which monitors political processes in Europe, by raising the issue of the rights of ethnic Hungarians in Transcarpathia, Madyar is sending a signal to both the Hungarian minority and Kyiv that Budapest will continue to defend minority rights.

According to the expert, the new Hungarian government will likely do this through negotiations rather than through confrontation with Ukraine.

"Statements regarding Hungarians in Ukraine are also a way to reassure conservative voters within the country and demonstrate that a change in government does not mean abandoning the protection of Hungarian national interests," added Rasto Kuzhel.

Madyar Demands New Rights for Hungarians in Transcarpathia

Péter Magyar, leader of the Tisza Party, which won the elections in Hungary, stated the need to expand the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine. Only under this condition is Budapest prepared to support the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

According to media reports, the issue arose during a meeting between Magyar and European Council President António Costa in Brussels. The future prime minister’s position largely echoes the demands previously voiced by Viktor Orbán.
