From June 20 to 22, North Korea held a plenary session of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party, during which the policy of strengthening its nuclear capabilities was reaffirmed. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un stated the need to “stay ahead of the rest of the world” in the nuclear arms race.
The meeting participants unanimously decided that nuclear-weapon state status is “the most appropriate and unique course of action” in an unstable international situation. Kim Jong-un plans to continuously expand the country’s nuclear capabilities and accelerate the construction of a 10,000-metric-ton strategic missile cruiser. There are also plans to strengthen the border with South Korea and build new naval bases.
Furthermore, Pyongyang sharply criticized the U.S.-South Korea Nuclear Consultative Group, calling it an “instrument of nuclear war” directed against North Korea.
It should be recalled that earlier, the DPRK’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the issue of the country’s nuclear disarmament was closed, stating that Pyongyang has no intention of renouncing its status as a nuclear power.
