The region’s largest landfill, located near Uzhhorod, continues to burn in Zakarpattia. Firefighters have managed to contain the fire to an area of 0.1 hectares. This was reported by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Zakarpattia Oblast on its Facebook page.
Details of the incident
The fire broke out yesterday evening at the landfill in the village of Barvinok, Uzhhorod District. Firefighting units from Uzhhorod, Chop, and the village of Serednie were deployed to combat the blaze. Shortly after midnight, firefighters managed to contain the fire, which covered an area of 0.1 hectares.
Resources deployed
Specialists are using drones to monitor the situation. Thirty-five people and 13 pieces of equipment, including heavy machinery from municipal utilities, are working at the scene. Due to heavy smoke, residents of nearby areas are advised to keep their windows closed until the fire is fully extinguished.
History of the landfill
The solid waste landfill in Barvink has been in operation since 1998, and its design capacity was calculated for 25 years, ending in November 2023. This facility serves not only Uzhhorod but also six neighboring communities.
The Zakarpattia Oblast has developed a regional waste management plan, dividing it into five clusters. There are plans to attract foreign or domestic investment for the construction of waste processing plants, but currently there are no such plants here.
