Tragic Death of a Child in Montenegro: Former Camp Director Detained

The former director of the Olympic Village children’s camp in Montenegro was detained and placed under extradition arrest in connection with the tragic death of a 10-year-old boy in 2023. This was announced by Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko, according to Glavkom.

The head of the Prosecutor General’s Office noted that after being charged, the former camp director fled abroad, which led to an international manhunt for her. At Ukraine’s request, Interpol issued a “red notice,” and on June 21, she was detained in Montenegro. The process of returning her to Ukraine is currently underway.

“This case is a matter of principle for me. I promised the parents of the deceased boy that those responsible would be held accountable. Fleeing abroad does not absolve one of responsibility,” Ruslan Kravchenko emphasized.

The Prosecutor General also reported that a court is already considering charges against the camp coach, who is accused of leaving the child in danger.

As a reminder, the tragedy occurred on August 3, 2023, at a soccer camp on the grounds of the Olympic Village sports and recreation complex. A 10-year-old boy was left unsupervised while swimming in a lake and drowned.

The investigation established that responsibility for ensuring the children’s safety rested with the coach, who has been charged under Part 3 of Article 135 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (leaving a child in danger, resulting in the child’s death).

In addition, as part of this criminal proceeding, the director of the private company, who was responsible for ensuring compliance with occupational safety requirements, was charged under Part 2 of Article 271 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
