On September 25, the Ukrainian national soccer team will play its first match of the new Nations League season against Hungary in Budapest. This match will mark the debut of new head coach Andrea Maldera.
As part of the new Nations League season, national teams will have the opportunity to play four matches between September 25 and October 5. After facing Hungary, Ukraine will play an away match against Georgia on September 28, followed by two home matches against Northern Ireland and Hungary on October 2 and 5, respectively.
In the previous edition of the Nations League, the Ukrainian national team finished second in its group alongside the Czech Republic, Georgia, and Albania, but failed to advance to the elite division in the playoffs after losing to Belgium.
The Hungarian national team, which competed in League A last season, was relegated to Division B after losing in the playoffs to Turkey.
It is interesting to note that the Ukrainian national team’s first match in the history of the country’s independence took place against the Hungarian team on April 29, 1992, when Ukraine lost 1–3. Australian referee Jared Gillett will officiate the upcoming match.
