The Military Counterintelligence Directorate of the Security Service of Ukraine, in cooperation with the State Bureau of Investigations, has uncovered a new Russian intelligence agent among Ukrainian defenders. This agent, an inspector with the State Border Guard Service, was recruited by the enemy and coordinated enemy shelling of northern regions. This was reported by “Glavkom,” citing the SBU press center.
It turned out that the agent used Google Maps to create “safe” routes for Russian missiles and drones that bypassed Ukrainian air defense systems. During business trips to the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions, he recorded the locations of radar stations, anti-aircraft missile systems, and mobile fire groups. He then plotted this data on a digital map, calculating the topographic elevations of the terrain.
The investigation established that the agent stored the collected information on his smartphone to transmit it to a handler in Russia, whose identity has already been established. This individual turned out to be an employee of Russia’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU). At his instruction, the agent also attempted to track the locations of Ukrainian military drone units and energy infrastructure facilities.
Thanks to the SBU’s swift action, the agent was detained during reconnaissance near a potential target. During searches, a smartphone was seized containing a prepared “report” for the GRU and the coordinates of Ukrainian facilities.
The Security Service of Ukraine charged the agent under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which pertains to treason under martial law.
