What to do when meeting a lynx in the Carpathians

The Eurasian lynx is one of the rarest cats found in Ukraine. Due to its rarity and cautious nature, it rarely comes into contact with humans; however, there are numerous myths about its aggressiveness.

The predator’s actual behavior

This species is listed in Ukraine’s Red Book as “rare.” Approximately 500 individuals live in the country, of which about 400 inhabit the Carpathians and over 100 live in Polissya.

Myths about aggression

The lynx does not view humans as prey. An attack is possible only in extreme cases, such as injury or the defense of kittens, but even then it does not pursue people.

The Lynx’s Stealth

Encountering this cat in the forest is a stroke of luck. It can watch a person for hours without being noticed. Most often, its presence can only be detected by tracks in the snow.

Size and Habitat

An adult weighs about 25 kg and requires a territory of 100 to 200 square kilometers to survive. A lynx can travel up to 25 km in a day.

Protecting farms

The most effective way to protect livestock is with electric fences. WWF-Ukraine has already provided 45 such systems to farmers in the Carpathians, and they have proven their effectiveness.
