Unusual Bluetooth device name causes plane to return to the US

A United Airlines flight bound for Spain was forced to make an emergency return to its departure airport due to a potential security threat. The cause was a provocative name on one of the passengers’ Bluetooth device.

According to RBC-Ukraine, citing The Independent, a Boeing 767 carrying 190 passengers and 12 crew members took off from Newark bound for Palma de Mallorca. However, just three hours later, the plane returned to Newark Liberty International Airport.

The decision was made after consulting with the airline’s headquarters in Chicago. The crew suspected a threat after seeing a device with a name consisting of “a specific four-letter word” on the list of available Bluetooth networks. Although the exact wording has not been disclosed, it is likely the word “bomb.”

Special forces were already waiting for the plane at the airport. Port Authority police ordered all passengers to evacuate the cabin immediately, after which law enforcement officers began a thorough search, checking every seat and the luggage compartment.
