Trump does not support Iran’s initiative on the Strait of Hormuz

U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed his dissatisfaction with Iran’s latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the conflict.

According to Ukrinform, citing Reuters, the American leader told his advisers that he is not satisfied with Iran’s latest proposal to end the two-month war.

The Iranian initiative calls for postponing discussions on the nuclear program until the end of hostilities and resolving issues related to shipping in the Persian Gulf.

Sources report that the proposal includes phased negotiations: first, a ceasefire and guarantees against a renewed escalation; then, resolving issues regarding the naval blockade and control of the Strait of Hormuz; and only at the end—discussions on the nuclear program, including Iran’s rights to enrich uranium.

This approach likely does not align with U.S. interests, as the U.S. insists on resolving the nuclear issue from the very start of negotiations. According to a U.S. official, this is precisely what caused Trump’s dissatisfaction.

As the NYT notes, Iran’s proposal sparked heated debate within the administration over which side has more leverage and is better prepared for the economic difficulties that could arise from the closure of the waterway.

White House spokeswoman Olivia Wells emphasized that the U.S. “does not negotiate through the press” and has already clearly outlined its “red lines” on this issue.
