The tragic death of a Russian artist in Poland, known for his caricatures of dictators

The body of the well-known Russian performance artist Semyon Skrepetsky, whose real name is Robert Kuzovkov, was found in the Polish town of Biała Podlaska. The artist, who gained fame for his satirical caricatures of Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko, was shot dead. This was reported by Glavkom, citing Polsat News.

Circumstances of the attack

The incident occurred in the Lublin Voivodeship. According to preliminary police reports, the artist was shot with a firearm. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, the artist’s life could not be saved. Polish law enforcement is currently investigating the circumstances of this brazen crime. Following the attack, police detained a suspect, who is unofficially identified as a Belarusian citizen. The motives for the crime remain unknown, but some opposition sources believe it may be politically motivated.

The Life and Work of Skrepetsky

Semyon Skrepetsky was born in 1981. In 2021, he left Russia due to political persecution and the threat of imprisonment, as Russian authorities had begun taking an interest in his work. In exile, the artist continued to actively criticize the dictatorial regimes in Russia and Belarus, and also created satirical works mocking aggression, propaganda, and supporters of war. Shortly before his death, he reported receiving regular threats.

"Glavkom" noted that the Russian judicial system had handed down a harsh verdict against the carnival sculptor Jacques Tilly from Germany, known for his political caricatures. The verdict concerned the creation of satirical images criticizing Vladimir Putin.
