European officials are expressing new concerns about U.S. President Donald Trump’s possible actions regarding Ukraine in the wake of the Iran crisis.
Impact on Europe
According to RBC-Ukraine, citing Politico, once the crisis with Iran is over, Trump may take control of the peace process in Ukraine, a prospect that is troubling European diplomatic circles.
EU Concerns
During the G7 summit in Evian, European diplomats expressed concern that Trump’s active intervention could derail the strategy of maximum pressure on Russia. One diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, noted that Trump’s distraction with Iran had been somewhat helpful.
There are fears that Trump could unilaterally dictate the terms of the peace process, which would not suit either Kyiv or Brussels.
Trump’s Statements in France
Arriving in Evian the day after his birthday, Trump met with French President Emmanuel Macron and stated that he was ready to focus on the Ukrainian issue after resolving the Iranian crisis.
He noted that twenty-five thousand people are dying every month in the conflict, and this must stop. Trump also reported that he had spoken by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
