The animated film *Super Mario: The Movie* became the first film of 2026 to surpass $1 billion in global box office revenue. This success was achieved following the film’s wide release.
The film’s production, which cost $110 million, proved to be relatively cost-effective for the animated genre. Universal and Illumination Studios worked on the project alongside Nintendo.
The franchise’s previous film, “The Super Mario Movie,” was also a huge success, grossing nearly $1.4 billion at the global box office. This new adaptation of the cult game is the highest-grossing Hollywood film of the year so far.
