Ukrainian forward Matviy Ponomarenko finally ended his goal drought and shared his thoughts on the victory over Azerbaijan’s “Qarabağ” in the third qualifying round of the Conference League. The young forward admitted that in the moment he scored, his intuition and quick reaction after an interception in midfield came to his rescue. Ponomarenko took advantage of Justin Lonwijk’s struggle for the ball, got to the ball at the right moment, and pushed it into the net. “Thank God the ball went in, so I broke my goal drought. I hope this game was my breakthrough, and there will be more to come—I’ll start scoring like this in every game,” said Matviy Ponomarenko.
The forward also noted that immediately after the final whistle, head coach Ihor Kostyuk approached him, congratulated him on the important goal, and thanked him for his work on the field.
Preparations for the Match in Baku
Despite the victory, the forward offered a critical assessment of the team’s performance, emphasizing the need to address their mistakes. According to the player, “Dynamo” needs to take more initiative and play with the ball more confidently.
