Russia may launch a new wave of mobilization if the war drags on

Russia is preparing a new mobilization of up to 300,000 people if the Kremlin decides to extend the war against Ukraine for another year or two. However, a final decision has not yet been made.

This is reported in an RBC-Ukraine article titled “Change of Tactics and New Goals: What Russia Might Do to Turn the Tide of War.”

As noted by Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation, this is one of the scenarios being considered if they decide to continue the war for another year or two. Another source cited by the publication claims that while such a decision has not yet been made in Moscow, all necessary procedures and processes for this are in place. First and foremost, the mobilization decree that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin relied on in the fall of 2022 is already in effect.

"The Russians plan to carry out—if necessary—a broader mobilization, and they are ready for it. This new wave of mobilization could involve, for example, the conscription of 300,000 people, as was the case in 2022," noted one of RBC-Ukraine’s sources. According to estimates, this will have a serious negative impact on the economic situation in the Russian Federation.

Mobilization in Russia

As a reminder, Russian authorities are increasingly resorting to covert forced mobilization measures amid massive battlefield losses and low recruitment rates. According to intelligence reports, regional and municipal executive authorities in Russian regions have received instructions to compile “volunteer” lists for deployment to the war.
