The United States has expressed dissatisfaction with the decision by Taiwan’s opposition-controlled legislature to approve additional military spending at a lower level than Washington deemed necessary.
Reuters reported this, citing a source in the U.S. administration.
“We are disappointed with Taiwan’s defense budget because some important items were left unfunded,” the official said. He added that the U.S. would have liked the initial package, particularly the purchase of American weapons, to be fully funded.
Parliament’s Decision
Last Friday, Taiwan’s opposition-controlled parliament approved additional defense spending of $25 billion, which is about two-thirds of the amount the government had proposed to strengthen the military amid the modernization of China’s armed forces.
Earlier reports indicated that Taiwan had successfully conducted the first test launch of a torpedo from a domestically produced submarine.
