Mammoth bone 25 thousand years old found in Kyiv region

Fighters from the Territorial Community Volunteer Unit (TCVU-2) made a unique archaeological discovery while on patrol in the southeastern outskirts of Pereyaslav, Kyiv Oblast. This was reported by the Pereyaslav National Historical and Ethnographic Reserve, according to Glavkom.

A mobile fire team discovered a fragment of a mammoth femur, specifically the epiphysis of the hip joint. The find is tentatively dated to the Paleolithic period, approximately 25,000 years ago, and has been handed over to scientists for detailed study and future exhibition.

Dmytro Stupak, Ph.D. in History and a research fellow at the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, notes that this bone may be part of an unknown settlement of early humans. In 2021, animal remains and a flint arrowhead from the same period were found in the same area. Although no new finds were discovered during the survey on March 27, the site is considered promising for further excavations.
