Every Sunday, the border guards of the Luhansk Detachment have a special ritual—making pizza for their comrades who are defending the eastern borders of the Kharkiv region. According to “Glavkom,” this story was featured in a report by “Suspilne.”
The underground kitchen is located 20 kilometers from the front line. It is covered by three meters of sand, and the total protective layer reaches five meters. The pizza oven was installed here after a conversation between chef Fedir and the commandant. It turned out that before his military service, Fedir had worked at a pizzeria for three years.
Now, together with his friend Volodymyr, they make between 25 and 40 pizzas every Sunday. It takes them about two hours to make one batch, including the time to preheat the oven. The pizza toppings are varied: cream sauce, cheese, pickles, game sausages, smoked chicken, bell peppers, and a little something spicy.
Fedir says he’s dreamed of becoming a chef since childhood and has been making pizza since he was 18. By training, he is a computer systems specialist, but he ended up working in the kitchen while on duty. “Being a cook is an important job, because a well-fed soldier is a good soldier. We try to make sure everyone is satisfied,” says the border guard.
In addition, operators from the 6th Regiment of the Special Operations Forces Rangers were able to capture three Russian soldiers and rescue a fawn while carrying out a mission. The soldiers also took in a kitten, which now wakes them up in the morning so they’ll turn on cartoons.
