EU Ambassador to Georgia Pawel Herczyński found himself at the center of a diplomatic incident after his remarks sparked outrage in Tbilisi. Herczyński warned of the country’s possible return to “dark times,” which drew a negative reaction from the Georgian government.
According to SOVA, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze expressed his dissatisfaction with the ambassador’s remarks, stating: “When the EU ambassador threatens our people with civil war and impoverishment, this is unacceptable.”
For this reason, Gerchinsky was summoned to a meeting with Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili to discuss his recent statements made in Brussels.
The European Path and Concerns About Democracy
Earlier, Gerchinsky noted that Georgia stands at a crossroads, and its future in Europe depends on the choices made by the government and society. He also expressed concern over the rollback of democracy in the country.
“Georgia’s future is not yet determined, but the decisions made in the near future will determine its direction,” the diplomat emphasized.
Ukrinform also reports that the EU did not include the port of Kulevi in the new package of sanctions against Russia, although this was planned due to its ties to Russian shadow fleets.
