June 1, 2025, was a landmark day for the Security Service of Ukraine, which carried out one of the most successful operations of the war—the “Spider’s Web” special operation. As a result of a large-scale drone strike, five Russian military airbases housing the Russian Federation’s strategic aviation were hit. According to the SBU press service, this operation was not only a blow to the enemy but also a striking example of modern military art that has already gone down in history.
Planning and Execution of the Operation
The operation was carried out on the orders of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and under the leadership of former SBU Head Lieutenant General Vasyl Malyuk.
“Spiderweb” was prepared for over a year and a half in complete secrecy. Its main goal was not only to inflict significant losses but also to shatter the illusion of security that Russia had been cultivating for decades. At a predetermined moment, 117 FPV drones simultaneously attacked strategic aircraft at four Russian military airfields: Belaya, Dyagilevo, Olenya, and Ivanovo. A total of 41 aircraft were destroyed, including Tu-95s, Tu-22M3s, Tu-160s, and A-50s.
Consequences of the attack
The damage from the operation exceeded $7 billion. Of particular importance is that the SBU was able to destroy part of Russia’s “nuclear triad,” which the Kremlin had used for years to intimidate the world. Following Operation “Spiderweb,” Russia has still been unable to restore its military capabilities.
This event once again underscores Ukraine’s strategy in countering the aggressor and demonstrates the high level of preparedness of Ukrainian special services.
