The Verkhovna Rada is actively working on a bill regarding the National Pantheon, where Ukraine’s outstanding figures will be honored. About 40 names have already been added to the list, but some of them are controversial due to recent events.
List of Candidates
According to Mykyta Poturaiev, chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy, a working group has already prepared a draft document that will soon be registered. The Ukrainian project is based on the model of the National Pantheon in Lisbon, where not only political and military figures but also cultural symbols of the nation are commemorated.
The Portuguese example
Portuguese legislation clearly defines the time frame and level of public support required to grant a person the status of a national hero. The Ukrainian draft refers to people who, at various times, led and built the Ukrainian state, such as during the times of Kievan Rus’, the Hetmanate, and the Zaporizhian Host.
Filter against Yanukovych
The document also includes filters to prevent the inclusion of individuals who do not meet the criteria for national heroes.
