Turkey has begun implementing a nationwide system to monitor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the country’s airspace.
The initiative was approved by the General Directorate of Civil Aviation (SHGM) of the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, according to Ukrinform, citing Haber Aero.
"The UAV traffic monitoring and control system will be implemented to prevent safety threats that may arise from the use of drones in Turkey’s airspace," the SHGM stated.
UAV traffic control will be carried out centrally and in real time. This will allow for tracking the location of drones and assessing flight safety.
A draft instruction regarding the UAV system has already been submitted for public comment. According to the document, drone operations will be divided into three categories based on risk level: open, private, and certified. Certified drones will have the broadest capabilities, including flying over large groups of people and transporting hazardous materials.
For other categories, capabilities will be limited. Drones registered abroad must obtain permission 20 days prior to use.
