The EU will change its protection rules for Ukrainians: some men may be denied protection

The European Union has drawn up new rules for Ukrainians who left the country after the start of the full-scale invasion. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing remarks by Magnus Brunner, European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, at a briefing in Brussels.

Protection will be extended until 2028

The European Commission has submitted a proposal to the EU Council to extend the Temporary Protection Directive for Ukrainians for another year.

“Today we will present a proposal to extend protection for another year,” Magnus Brunner said at a briefing in Brussels. If the EU Council supports this initiative, the protection will be extended until March 4, 2028.

Who Will Be Exempt

Along with the extension, the European Commission is proposing to impose restrictions on a certain category of men. “The proposal stipulates that temporary protection will not be granted to new arrivals who are not permitted to leave Ukraine due to military obligations,” the European Commissioner explained. In other words, men who are prohibited by Ukrainian law from traveling abroad will not be able to receive temporary protection in the European Union.

As a reminder, the Council of Europe previously called for Ukrainian refugees not to be forced to return home, emphasizing that returning remains dangerous. Meanwhile, Denmark has proposed revoking residence permits for some Ukrainians.
