At a press conference, Charnvirakul announced the conclusion of an agreement regarding the safe passage of Thai oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic decision takes on particular significance amid tensions in the region, as Thailand seeks to ensure uninterrupted energy supplies.
The Prime Minister noted that this agreement is intended to alleviate concerns regarding fuel imports into the country.
Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important routes for global oil trade. In 2025, approximately 13 million barrels of oil passed through it daily, accounting for about 31% of maritime shipments.
Earlier, Bloomberg reported that Iran had already begun charging certain ships a fee for “safe passage” through the Strait of Hormuz. According to sources, this amount could reach $2 million per voyage.
