Rubio believes Ukraine’s accession to NATO is unrealistic in the short term

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed the view that Ukraine’s accession to NATO as a security guarantee is unrealistic in the short term. According to him, this should not be expected in the near future due to the stance of Russia and President Vladimir Putin, who is unlikely to agree to such a move.

This information was reported by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty journalist Alex Raufoglu, who noted that three high-ranking European officials in Atlanta confirmed his remarks. Rubio, they said, had expressed doubts to Western diplomats over the past two days regarding Putin’s possible attendance at the G20 summit in Miami this December.

Journalists also noted that after speaking with Rubio, the diplomats were left with the impression that the secretary of state does not believe Putin is willing to reach any agreement regarding Ukraine before spring 2027. This indicates a pessimistic outlook regarding potential negotiations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently stated that Ukraine’s accession to NATO is in Russia’s interest, even though Russia actively opposes it. According to him, Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance could provide Russia with greater security than Ukraine’s non-aligned status.

Zelenskyy also emphasized the importance of the Ukrainian military to NATO, noting that future security guarantees for Ukraine should include several measures, among which is NATO membership. In addition, Rubio pointed out that there is no certainty that the war in Ukraine will end soon through negotiations, as the parties are still far from reaching an agreement.
