Flash explained why Russia is using gasoline-powered drones

Since yesterday evening, the Russian army has launched a massive attack on Ukrainian territory, using dozens of "Shahed"-type gasoline-powered kamikaze drones. Sergey Beskrestnov, the president’s advisor on defense technology, known by the call sign “Flash,” explained why the occupiers chose these particular drones.

According to Beskrestnov, the use of gasoline-powered drones instead of jet-powered ones is due to the overcast skies over Ukraine. He noted that Russian troops are counting on Ukrainian interceptor crews having a harder time detecting these drones in conditions of poor visibility.

It is worth noting that Ukraine’s air defense forces continue to actively respond to threats. According to the General Staff, on October 27, 2026, 371 out of 433 drones were shot down, of which only 64 were jet-powered. This indicates the growing effectiveness of Ukraine’s air defense forces.

Western and central regions of Ukraine were affected by the “Shahed” attacks. In the Rivne region, four residents were injured when a drone struck a residential building, and a child was injured in the Poltava region.

In addition, the Russian military carried out strikes on energy infrastructure in the Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. In the Zhytomyr region, more than 650 settlements were left without power due to nighttime shelling, and in the Dnipropetrovsk region, 100,000 customers lost power.
