The full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which Putin launched to restore Russia’s status as a superpower, has become a real challenge in the fifth year of the war. This is reported by “Glavkom,” citing the German publication Bild.
Analysis of the situation on the front lines
The publication’s journalists analyzed the current situation on the front lines and within Russia, identifying three key problems for the Russian leader that are currently impossible to solve.
Huge manpower losses
According to Western analysts, the Russian army loses about 35,000 soldiers killed and wounded every month. Russian opposition sources estimate the death toll at 352,000, of whom about 217,800 have been identified by name. Despite the Kremlin’s attempts to compensate for these losses with new recruits, the army has stopped growing in numbers.
Loss of Territory
For the first time in a long while, Russia has begun losing more territory than it is capturing. New advances are instantly nullified by Ukrainian counterattacks. Since the start of the year, the Russians have managed to occupy only 220 square kilometers, which accounts for 0.04% of Ukraine’s territory, while the Ukrainian Defense Forces have de-occupied 189 square kilometers.
The war is returning to Russia
The hostilities, which were initially planned as a rapid foreign expedition, are now shifting onto Russian territory. Ukrainian drones regularly attack oil refineries, military bases, and critical infrastructure behind enemy lines.
