In photos released by the DPRK’s state news agency KCNA, Kim Jong Un is seen inspecting a facility that is likely a uranium enrichment plant. Experts believe it may be a new facility within the Yongbyon complex.
Kim Jong-un stated that over the past five years, North Korea’s capacity to produce nuclear materials for military purposes has more than doubled compared to previous levels.
Further expansion of nuclear capabilities
The DPRK leader ordered a further increase in production volumes to achieve long-term strategic goals. He emphasized that this expansion is “vitally necessary” for building a powerful nuclear arsenal capable of countering “hostile U.S. policies” and potential threats to the country’s security.
Regional Tensions
Bloomberg analysts note that this statement came amid high regional tensions. In recent months, North Korea has stepped up tests of various types of ballistic missiles and strengthened military-technical cooperation with Russia, causing serious concern in the West.
