Ukraine will not be able to quickly become a full member of the European Union, as this path requires long-term reforms. Although the country is receiving support for its gradual rapprochement, the integration process will remain complex and will take a long time. This was stated by Benjamin Addad, France’s Minister Delegate for European Affairs, according to Glavkom, citing Le Figaro.
Geopolitical Necessity
Addad emphasized that the integration of Ukraine, Moldova, and the Western Balkan countries into the EU is a geopolitical necessity, but it requires strict conditions to be met. He noted that there can be no compromises regarding EU values and legislation.
The Need for Reforms
The minister stressed that Ukraine must demonstrate progress in the fight against corruption, ensuring the rule of law, and the independence of the judicial system. Without these reforms, full membership will remain out of reach. Paris supports gradual rapprochement through interim statuses, but for full membership, countries must reform.
Changes in the EU
Addad also noted that changes are needed within the European Union itself. For successful enlargement, the EU must become more flexible and undergo internal transformations.
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron proposed a “symbolic accession” of Ukraine to the EU to accelerate political processes. In June 2024, Ukraine officially began negotiations on EU membership, marking an important step toward integration.
