Fire in Zakarpattia: new forces and investigation of the causes

A fire broke out in a forest in the Mukachevo district; as of 8:00 a.m. on May 6, it had engulfed approximately 75 hectares of the Verkhniy Volovets Forestry District.

A total of 243 personnel and 46 pieces of equipment have been deployed to fight the fire, including 138 State Emergency Service (SES) rescuers and 36 pieces of equipment. Units from Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions have joined the effort—an additional 58 rescuers and 14 pieces of equipment.

Also participating in the firefighting efforts are 105 employees of the Carpathian branch of the State Enterprise "Forests of Ukraine" and 10 pieces of equipment. The State Emergency Service plans to deploy aircraft. Work is ongoing.

Meanwhile, the Transcarpathian Regional Prosecutor’s Office has opened a criminal investigation into the fire on the Borzhava Ridge. Law enforcement officials are investigating whether arson or another human factor could have been involved.

According to the investigation, a report of the fire was received on May 5 at approximately 3:30 p.m. By evening, the fire had spread to approximately 75 hectares of forest near the village of Volovets. The causes and circumstances of the fire are currently being determined. The case has been opened under the article on the destruction or damage of flora, resulting in serious consequences (Part 2 of Article 245 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
