Conversation between Wang Yi and Rubio

The phone call between Wang Yi and Rubio took place on Thursday, April 30, a few weeks before the planned summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing. "The Taiwan issue concerns China’s core interests. The U.S. must honor its commitments and make the right choice to open up new opportunities for Sino-American cooperation and make due efforts for world peace," the Chinese foreign minister stated.

Wang Yi emphasized that the Taiwan issue remains the "greatest source of risk" in relations between the two countries. "Both sides must safeguard the hard-won stability, prepare well for important high-level meetings, expand cooperation, and resolve differences," he stressed.
