On Monday, June 22, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his decision to step down. According to Sky News, this was prompted by criticism from his colleagues in the Labour Party.
Starmer noted that he had received a clear message from members of the parliamentary caucus, who had expressed their views on the future of the party leadership. “I respectfully accept this view and have decided to resign,” he emphasized.
On the same day, Starmer spoke with King Charles to inform him of his decision. “I will remain in office as prime minister until the election is over, ensuring an orderly transition of power,” he added. Starmer also pledged his full support to his successor.
The process of nominating candidates for the new leader of the Labour Party will begin on July 9, and a new leader is expected to be elected by September.
Earlier reports indicated that more than 81 Labour Party MPs supported the idea of a leadership change. Party rules allow the formal launch of a leadership election with the support of 20% of the parliamentary group.
