US has limited goals in Iran, but Trump insists on continuing operations

The U.S. Department of Defense has warned of a reduction in the number of strategic targets for strikes against Iran, despite President Donald Trump’s desire to continue the military campaign. This was reported by Glavkom, citing Politico.

According to sources among current and former officials, the new strike plan announced by Trump in his address to the nation limits the ability to destroy key targets, such as secret stockpiles of ballistic missiles. The situation is complicated by Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and Tehran’s economic actions, which could strengthen its position and reduce its willingness to negotiate on the nuclear program and regional security.

“We can continue to work on a list of targets whose significance is constantly diminishing, which could lead to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps strengthening its influence and deeming an endless war with the U.S. justified,” noted one Pentagon official. He added that the president has limited options: “If he backs down, it will be humiliating; if he stays, we could get bogged down in a quagmire.”

In his address, Donald Trump stated that Iran’s armed forces, defense industry, and political leadership had suffered significant losses after a month of intense strikes. He also noted that the operation would continue for another two to three weeks, promising to “deliver an extremely powerful blow to them,” without specifying the list of targets.
