The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump intends to significantly increase funding for programs aimed at countering China’s global influence. According to a report by “Glavkom,” citing the Associated Press, hundreds of millions of dollars may be allocated for these measures.
Funding for Cable Replacement
Last week, the Trump administration notified Congress of its intention to allocate $175.8 million to modernize undersea telecommunications cables in the Caribbean and Central America.
New State Department Projects
The U.S. State Department is also considering allocating more than $340 million to over 50 projects in the Western Hemisphere, Africa, and Asia. These initiatives cover cybersecurity, critical infrastructure protection, the development of secure communications technologies, and countering Chinese influence in telecommunications and the extraction of critical minerals.
U.S. Domestic Perspective
According to a State Department document, the U.S. must respond to China’s growing economic, technological, and diplomatic influence, which Washington views as a threat to American national interests. Many of the new programs are intended to restore the U.S. presence in areas where funding was cut or suspended last year.
In particular, there are plans to resume projects related to critical infrastructure protection and cybersecurity in Latin America.
