The American company Amazon plans to launch more than 5,000 satellites into orbit to provide global mobile communication services and compete with Starlink.
According to RBC-Ukraine, citing the Financial Times, the tech giant has filed an official application with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The company plans to obtain approval and fully deploy the network by 2028.
Amazon’s new satellite system is expected to provide voice calls, messaging, high-speed data transmission, and access to emergency services anywhere in the world.
This move marks Amazon’s first step into the satellite mobile communications market, which is currently dominated by SpaceX’s Starlink service, led by Elon Musk.
It is worth noting that Elon Musk previously stated that the Russian military had attempted to obtain Starlink terminals through smuggling, but they managed to restrict Russian access using a “whitelist.”
As a reminder, Russia has already launched a second batch of its “Rassvet” satellites into orbit, which are intended to serve as a counterpart to Starlink; however, they have not yet taken their places in the orbital constellation.
