The German Navy will receive a new laser system from Rheinmetall and MBDA

The German Navy is preparing to enhance its defensive capabilities with a new laser weapon system to be developed by Rheinmetall and MBDA Deutschland. The contract to develop this innovative system was signed by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology, and In-Service Support on July 9, 2026.

According to a statement from Rheinmetall, the laser system will be ready for use by 2029 and will cost an average of a three-digit million euro amount. This project involves the development of a comprehensive naval system that covers all stages of target engagement—from detection to destruction.

A joint venture to be established by MBDA Deutschland and Rheinmetall Waffe Munition will be responsible for implementing the project. The new system is expected to significantly enhance the protection of German ships against threats such as drones and other potential dangers. It can also be used to protect ports.

Rheinmetall noted that the laser system is based on a prototype that underwent testing in maritime conditions over the course of a year. During these tests, more than 1,000 successful shots were fired at various targets.
