Today, May 31, Ukraine celebrates Chemist Day. This holiday is a professional holiday for workers in the chemical and petrochemical industries and is observed on the last Sunday in May. In Ukraine, it was officially established in 1994 by a Presidential Decree. It is dedicated to scientists, engineers, lab technicians, and everyone who contributes to the development of modern technologies, medicine, and the economy.
Salaries in the chemical industry
According to data from job search portals, the average salary for a process engineer in Ukraine in May 2026 is 41,000 UAH, and in Kyiv—56,000 UAH. Overall, salaries for this position range from 23,000 to 87,000 UAH.
A general chemist earns an average of 27,500 UAH across Ukraine, and in the capital—about 30,000 UAH. The salary of an analytical chemist ranges from 20,000 to 40,000 UAH: entry-level professionals start at 15,000–20,000 UAH, while experienced specialists with a PhD or a narrow specialization in pharmaceuticals can earn 30,000–50,000 UAH or more. A chemical engineer in manufacturing can earn up to 50,000 UAH, although such work involves increased risks.
Engineer or Analyst: Who Earns More
Engineers’ salaries are usually higher, but the choice between an engineering and an analytical position is often a trade-off between income and working conditions. Engineers have the opportunity to earn higher salaries, but analysts provide stable and predictable incomes in a laboratory setting. An experienced analyst with a narrow specialization can match an engineer in terms of earnings.
In Kyiv, the difference is more pronounced: the average salary for a process engineer is 56,000 UAH, while that of an analyst is 25,000–45,000 UAH.
Salary changes over the year
Process engineers saw the largest salary increase—+37% over the year.
