Poland supports the modernization of Ukraine’s MiG-29s under certain conditions

Poland has expressed its willingness to assist in the modernization of Ukraine’s MiG-29 fighter jets, but emphasized that the financial burden must be borne by Ukraine or its allies. This position was articulated by Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, according to Glavkom, citing Polsat News.

Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz responded to reports of technical concerns raised by Ukraine regarding the condition of the Polish MiGs, stating his willingness to assist in their modernization. “We are open to discussion: if Ukraine deems modernization necessary, we can provide support, but the financial costs must be covered by the Ukrainian side or by allies who are prepared to do so,” he noted.

The minister also emphasized that reaching an agreement on this issue is possible, provided the principle of reciprocity is observed. Kosiniak-Kamysz added that there is more positive news now than there was a few days ago, and he underscored the importance of the principle of genuine solidarity.

As a reminder, Ukraine and Poland continue to discuss the terms of transferring MiG-29 fighter jets in exchange for unmanned aerial vehicle technology. Poland sees a high likelihood of a successful outcome to this process. Poland has long been considering the possibility of transferring its Soviet-era MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine; these aircraft are gradually being phased out of the Polish Air Force due to the arrival of modern F-35s and other Western aircraft.
