Nearly half of Britons support rejoining the EU — poll

In the United Kingdom, a new poll has shown that nearly half of voters support the idea of rejoining the European Union. This survey has gained relevance amid statements by Prime Minister Andy Burnham regarding the possibility of revising relations with the EU after the upcoming elections.

The poll, conducted by the Messina Group (TMG), found that rejoining the EU could boost support for the Labour Party by 7% if Bernam proposes holding a new referendum. About one-third of respondents believe a referendum should be held first, while one in six believes the mandate received in the general election will be sufficient.

The poll results reinforce the position of Downing Street officials, who are seeking to pledge negotiations on a return to the EU in the upcoming election. In his speech at the Labour Party conference on September 29, Burnham noted that a full return to the European Union should be among the possible options.

However, some Labour lawmakers, particularly those from constituencies that voted for Brexit, have expressed concern about the risks associated with this move. They believe that even an attempt to gauge public support could have political consequences and strengthen the position of the right-wing populist party Reform UK.

The poll showed that 49% of respondents support rejoining the EU, while 28.5% oppose it. Other options, such as maintaining current relations while removing trade barriers, also received significant support. About 52.4% of those surveyed consider Brexit a mistake, while 29.7% believe that leaving the EU was the right decision.
