India approves $25 billion worth of arms purchases, including Russian ones

According to the Indian Ministry of Defense, there are plans to purchase five more Russian S-400 systems at a cost of approximately $6.1 billion. These systems are designed to intercept long-range aerial threats over critical infrastructure.

India currently operates three S-400 systems, which were deployed during the four-day conflict with Pakistan last May. Two more systems are expected to arrive within the next month.

This decision may draw criticism from the U.S., which has previously criticized New Delhi for its deals with Moscow; however, India continues to rely on its longtime ally for advanced technology.

Despite a decline in volume, Russia remains India’s largest supplier of military equipment, accounting for more than a third of arms purchases, according to the 2025 report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), which tracks global arms sales.
