Ukrainian refugees in Germany can now exchange their driver’s licenses for German ones without having to take written or driving tests. This was made possible by a decision of the Bundesrat, which was adopted at its 1,067th plenary session.
What’s Changing for Ukrainian Drivers
According to the decision, Ukraine and Montenegro have been added to the list of countries whose driver’s licenses can be converted to German ones without additional testing. This will make the adjustment process easier for many Ukrainians seeking asylum in Germany.
Expansion of languages for theory exams
In addition, the Bundesrat has expanded the list of languages in which the driver’s license theory exam can be taken. Ukrainian and Kurmanji have now been added to this list.
Recognition of Licenses Exchanged Within the EU
The new regulation also provides for the recognition of driver’s licenses from third countries that have already been exchanged in another European Union country. This will simplify procedures for many migrants.
In addition, the regulation allows optometrists to conduct vision tests for truck and bus drivers, which will improve road safety.
