Finland has imposed temporary restrictions on air traffic over the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland due to the escalating security situation following an attack by Ukrainian drones on Russian territory. Subsequently, similar measures were taken for maritime traffic, according to a statement from the country’s Armed Forces.
The air traffic restrictions took effect at 6:10 a.m., and at 6:48 a.m., shipping was temporarily restricted in part of the Gulf of Finland. Jere Paldanius, a spokesperson for the Finnish General Staff, noted that these measures were prompted by nighttime drone strikes from Ukraine on Russian targets. At the same time, he assured that no drones have been detected entering Finnish airspace so far.
Paldanius added that the possibility of drones accidentally entering Finnish airspace cannot be ruled out, so citizens should follow the recommendations of the Ministry of the Interior.
As a reminder, on May 3, drones entered Finnish airspace near the border with Russia, after which temporary flight restrictions were imposed over the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland and an investigation was launched.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo discussed this incident with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a summit in Yerevan. He reaffirmed his support for Ukraine and its right to defend itself, but stressed that violations of Finnish airspace are unacceptable.
