Anthropic announced the creation of its own laboratory for conducting biological experiments in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, with the aim of accelerating the development of treatments for rare diseases using artificial intelligence. Although the company is not yet conducting clinical trials, its CEO, Dario Amodei, spoke about the potential of artificial intelligence in medicine.
Eric Kauderer-Abrams, head of life sciences at Anthropic, confirmed that the lab is being used for actual research, although the details of its operations remain unknown. He emphasized that the company aims to find solutions for diseases that the traditional pharmaceutical industry often overlooks due to their low commercial appeal.
Amadeus has a personal interest in this field, as his father died from a disease for which there was no effective treatment. He emphasized that the company’s goal is to develop powerful AI for the benefit of the world, particularly in the life sciences.
Anthropic also plans to use artificial intelligence to automate laboratory processes, specifically to expand the capabilities of the Claude system for controlling robotic systems. According to Kauderer-Abrams, this should significantly accelerate research processes, though human oversight will remain mandatory.
In addition to launching a drug development program, the company announced the Claude Science platform and the acquisition of the startup Coefficient Bio earlier in June. Anthropic is actively building out its infrastructure, seeking specialists in various fields to develop its laboratory capabilities.
Despite its ambitious plans, the company also warns of potential risks associated with the development of artificial intelligence, calling for caution in creating new models to avoid negative consequences for humanity.
