Alla Umanska, 89, is undergoing rehabilitation at a hospital in Kyiv after miraculously surviving a rocket attack in Lukyanivka on June 24. Photographer Kostyantyn Liberov shared photos of the woman and her destroyed home, according to Glavkom.
“Alla Mykolayivna was pulled from under the rubble after the first strike. Her apartment was on the first floor, and she woke up from the explosion, disoriented, thinking that someone had hit her in the face. She recalls that it felt as if her nose had been pushed inside her face,” Liberov says.
Alla Umanska worked as a teacher of Ukrainian history and law; she survived World War II. Her poems, like her apartment, were destroyed in the shelling. Before the evacuation, Alla managed to grab the keys to her apartment and asked her daughter Tamara to lock it up. But, as Liberov notes, there was nothing left to lock.
“Today, Alla Mykolayivna is in the hospital, preparing for rehabilitation. Her overall condition has significantly worsened due to her injuries, especially her hearing. However, even after the horror she has endured, she is most concerned about the young people who are dying. Among the dead are her students, and she was a Teacher with a capital T. She loved all her students, and they loved her. For her, this is the greatest loss,” Liberov shares.
