Hungary is insisting that Ukraine fulfill 11 conditions regarding the Hungarian minority before meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in order to turn a new page in bilateral relations.
Péter Magyar, the Hungarian Prime Minister, during a press conference in Brussels with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, noted the importance of guarantees for the 100,000 Hungarians in Ukraine so that they can use their native language in education, culture, and public administration.
He highlighted Hungary’s 11-point proposal aimed at addressing the issues of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine. Magyar emphasized that minority rights are part of universal human rights that apply across all of Europe.
“If you live in a region where your native language is the primary language, you should be able to use it, whether at school or as mayor,” the prime minister noted.
Mátyás also reported that several rounds of technical discussions with Ukrainian partners have already taken place, expressing hope that all 11 points will be considered and the corresponding changes made to Ukrainian legislation.
