Chersonesos Taurica Is Under Threat: UNESCO Sounds the Alarm

UNESCO has added the site “The Ancient City of Tauric Chersonesos and Its Chora” to the List of World Heritage in Danger. This was reported by “Glavkom,” citing the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Decision of the World Heritage Committee

This important decision was adopted during the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga noted that the site is located in the temporarily occupied Crimea, where it faces constant threats and destruction at the hands of the Russian occupying authorities.

An Appeal to the International Community

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has called on the international community to strengthen cooperation to prevent the illicit trafficking of cultural property originating from Crimea.

Russian occupiers have destroyed a valuable archaeological site—the ruins of the ancient city of Chersonesos. A new open-air theater has been built in its place, undermining the region’s authenticity. Some artifacts have been taken to museums in Russia.
