Air Canada plane collides with a fire truck in New York: two pilots are killed

A tragedy occurred at LaGuardia, one of New York’s airports—an Air Canada plane collided with a fire truck on the runway. The pilot and co-pilot of the plane were killed in the incident, and two other people were injured.

Details of the tragedy

According to CNN, a Jazz Aviation flight operated for Air Canada collided with an Airport Response and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicle around 11:40 p.m. local time on Sunday. The fire truck was en route to another call when the accident occurred.

Response to the incident

Emergency response protocols were activated immediately after the collision. The airport is currently closed to facilitate rescue operations and a thorough investigation, a representative of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said.

According to the official, two people in the fire truck were injured, though their condition has not been specified. Video and photos from the scene show severe damage to the front of the plane.

Confirmation from the airline

Jazz Aviation confirmed that the incident involved Flight 8646, which departed from Montreal. There were 72 passengers and four crew members on board the CRJ-900 aircraft. The plane took off from Montreal-Trudeau shortly after 10:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
