The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is an important holiday for Eastern Rite Christians, celebrated annually in honor of the mother of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary. This holiday is also known by the popular name “Third Purification.”
In 2026, Orthodox believers will celebrate the Third Purification on November 21. This is due to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine’s (OCU) transition to a new calendar in September 2023, which moves the celebration of fixed Orthodox feasts 13 days earlier than before.
Previously, the Feast of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple was observed on December 4, but the calendar change has resulted in a new date for the celebration. This transition marked an important step for the OCU toward adapting to new conditions.
In addition, among Eastern Rite Christians, there is a tradition of commemorating deceased loved ones on special days of remembrance, also known as “Parental Saturdays.” In 2026, these days will also be observed, and believers will be able to honor the memory of their loved ones.
Before major holidays, believers observe a fast during which the consumption of meat, dairy products, and eggs is prohibited. This is part of the spiritual preparation for celebrating important events in the church calendar.
