In the 2023–2024 school year, there are 3,380,863 students enrolled in Ukrainian general secondary schools, which is 20% fewer than in the previous year.
According to data from the AIKOM system, the number of students has decreased by 849,137 compared to the 2021/2022 school year, as reported by Olena Fidanyan, director of the Department of Education and Science of the Kyiv City State Administration.
Fidanyan also noted that compared to 2025, the number of students has decreased by 95,573. The largest number of students is in Kyiv—302,400, which accounts for 8.9% of the total number of students in Ukraine.
Dnipropetrovsk Oblast ranks second with 8% of students, followed by Lviv Oblast with 7.9%, Odesa Oblast with 6.8%, and Kyiv Oblast with 6.6% of students.
The average class size in Ukraine is 15.7 students, but these figures vary significantly across regions; in particular, Kyiv and the Kyiv region have high class sizes due to population density and demand for school spots.
