The World’s Best Soccer Leagues, According to The Athletic

The well-known sports website The Athletic has compiled a ranking of the best World Cups in soccer. According to “Glavkom,” the 1970 World Cup took first place. That tournament featured a memorable final between Brazil and Italy, which ended with a 4–1 score. It was the first World Cup to be broadcast in color, and it marked the debut of substitutions and the use of yellow and red cards by referees.

The 1982 and 1986 tournaments also made the top three. Interestingly, the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, has already made it into the top 10 according to The Athletic.

Recently, Portugal national team forward Cristiano Ronaldo liked a video accusing FIFA of corruption and of favoring Argentina on its way to the World Cup final.

Recall that Egypt’s head coach, Hossam Hassan, criticized the refereeing following a 2–3 loss to Argentina in the Round of 16 of the 2026 tournament. Argentina came back from a 0–2 deficit to secure the victory late in the game, advancing them to the quarterfinals. The Egyptian team was dissatisfied with referee Letexier’s decisions, particularly regarding VAR calls and a penalty that was not awarded.

It should be noted that Spain became the new world champion after defeating Argentina in extra time.
