The International Olympic Committee’s decision to temporarily reinstate the Russian Olympic Committee’s membership and lift restrictions on Russian athletes has sparked outrage among Czech sports experts and officials.

Zbyněk Sikora, vice chair of the Czech Olympic Committee and chair of the Czech Paralympic Committee, emphasized that the Czech Republic maintains the position that the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes on the international stage is unacceptable as long as Russian aggression continues.
Sikora noted that while sports and politics are different spheres, they are nevertheless closely linked, and sports often become a tool for political manipulation. He expressed sympathy for the athletes affected by these decisions but believes it is necessary to use every means available to combat the war.
Jiří Hamza, president of the Czech Biathlon Union and vice president of the International Biathlon Union, added that authoritarian regimes have historically used sports as a means of propaganda. He cited historical examples of sports serving as a showcase for dictatorships.
